How time flies when you’re having fun. Or being busy. In the past month I’ve moved to Ann Arbor and started work at Google, and finally feel settled enough to let everyone know how it’s going.
Ann Arbor is definitely a nice change of pace after living in Wilmore, KY for the past 3.5 years. The city is big enough to have a great selection of diverse restaurants (Chinese, Arab, Mexican, etc.) and lots of activities. But it’s also small enough to have the feel of a community. My apartment is on the east side of the city, just a hop skip away from Ypsilanti, and is a great location in terms of commute and shopping. Plus the University of Michigan is close if I ever start to think about grad school. Overall I’ve been very pleased with Ann Arbor, or “A2″ as the locals call it.
Working at Google is both fun and challenging. My role is to support advertisers that use AdWords, Google’s advertising platform. If you’ve ever seen those text ads when doing a Google search, then you’ve seen an AdWords ad. I’ll be on phones, chat, and e-mail answering questions our advertisers have about the system.
Google definitely has a unique culture, and it’s a great place to work at. I personally like being able to wear jeans to work every day, because my “professional” wardrobe is scant. Also, free lunch is nice, and is keeping my monthly grocery bill to a minimum. But the best aspect of Google is being surrounded by really talented individuals; it’s already beginning to stretch me in terms of professional development. I really couldn’t be happier with this opportunity, and can’t wait to see where it goes.
