It’s great to be a geek.

July 15th, 2008

So my inner geek has been unleashed this past week for a few reasons.  First of all, I managed to port my webmail servers over to Google using Google Apps.  This means that Google handles all my incoming mail for my domain (alutz.com).  It also includes the slick Gmail interface, as well as Spam protection.  So if you want to sign up for an email account with me, there’s never been a better time.

I also managed to mess around with my Linksys router that’s been sitting in it’s box for a couple months.  I flashed it with DD-WRT linux-based firmware, which gives me a ton of control over the hardware.  At first, I did this so that I could use my router as a Wireless Repeater, as the coverage in my apartment wasn’t all that great.  But now I’ve got it acting as a switch, since we wired an ethernet cable from the router next door (where the modem is) to the apartment out here.  Now I’ve got the router upstream handling all the DHCP assignments, while my router is doing a great job as an access point.

E3 is being hosted this week as well.  I haven’t really followed video games with any sincerity since about 2005.  But with my acquisition of a Xbox 360 last Christmas, as well as a soon to be purchased PS3, I’ve reintroduced myself into the gaming world.  I’m really excited about Microsoft’s partnership with Netflix, which will allow Xbox Live who are also Netflix subscribers play Netflix’s online library over Live.  Sony’s code named “Massive Action Game” looks promising (256 players online!).

Anyways, with two weeks left before I head off to China, I’m trying to absorb as much tech as possible while I still have some free time.  What can I say?  I’m a geek.
